It is not surprising that human resource management is increasingly becoming a subject or topic of interest in several training and development seminars. Human resource management (HRM) is likewise a popular major in bachelor's degree programs in colleges today. There is a growing

recognition of the need for some formal training in managing human resources and this stems from company leaders' and managers' expectations that HR practitioners ought to contribute to workforce competence, organizational effectiveness, and organizational sustainability.

Company leaders recognize the role that HR practitioners play in talent management, specifically in attracting, motivating, engaging, developing, and retaining a competent workforce. Managing Human Resources: Local and Global Perspectives (Outcomes-based Learning) is in response to this need for training and developing future HR practitioners and managers.

This textbook is designed with the following features which distinguish it from other books on human resource management (HRM) published in the Philippines. Distinctively, it

  • covers theoretical and practical approaches to understanding human resource management in the Philippines and in other countries.
  • is outcomes-based. It focuses on what learners will achieve, not only in terms of increased knowledge, but also in the development of specific skills and competencies required fo the practice of HRM. This is aligned with the goal of Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to establish an outcomes-based approach to education. CHED points out that "the changing realities spurred by globalization underscore the shift in contemporary international education discourse from education to life-long learning, and from education as transmission of expert knowledge to education as building learner competencies (CMO #46; Series 2012). This book ensures that the readers can demonstrate acquisition of specific learning outcomes by linking the cases, experiential exercises, and questions for discussion to the expected outcomes.
  • is written by academicians, practitioners, consultants and entrepreneurs who have years of experience in human resource management in a variety of industries, both in the Philippines and abroad.
  • uses a framework that demonstrates how HRM is aligned with the strategic objectives of the organization.  All HR programs and activities are developed and evaluated in terms of how they add value to the organization using HR metric tools.
  • takes into consideration CHED’s HRM curriculum, and
  • utilizes case analyses with experiential exercises designed to develop students’ and future HR practitioners’ analytical capability, problem solving and decision making skills.
  • provides a teacher’s manual to assist HRM and Management faculty.

Managing Human Resources: Local and Global Perspectives was written (1) for college students taking courses in human resource management ,(2) for those who need to understand people management as part of other business degree programs, and (3) as a good reference for HR practitioners who need to enhance their understanding of the practical bases of human resource management both in the Philippines as well as in other countries.  The theoretical approaches to HRM and the comprehensive research-based and practical information contained in this book will prepare students for their future human resources related jobs as HR practitioners, managers, or entrepreneurs.
